Were you aware that Chivas USA are playing the Galaxy this week? It's true, the second leg of the superclasico this season is Sunday at the Home Depot Center. This time Chivas will be the "away" team, but it will be the most familiar away match they'll play this season. In an effort to get you excited for the match (although I'm sure you'll be excited) we'll be running a series of articles this week in anticipation of the rivalry week. Today's entry: a good omen for Sunday?

You see, the Goats defeated the Galaxy today 2-1 in the reserve league match. Victor Estupinan scored his third goal in reserve matches this season, so he has a ways to go before he gets to 30, even with the reserves, but that's the hubris of youth, I suppose.

Continued after the jump

Chivas' lineup was mixed for this match, just like in their last reserve match, against the Portland Timbers. Andrew Boyens, Zarek Valentin, Michael Lahoud, Blair Gavin, Jorge Flores, and Marcos Mondaini, all starters or in the regular first-team rotation, started this match, while first team reserves of Zach Thornton, Mariano Trujillo, Estupinan, and Chris Cortez also started. Several U18 Academy players also played in the match, repeating a pattern from the Portland match.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy featured mostly reserves and youth team players except for starting goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, Chris Birchall, Adam Cristman and Mike Magee. But we won't worry too much about that. A win's a win, right?

Hector Jimenez opened the scoring in the 25th minute, putting the Galaxy ahead and possibly mirroring Chivas' first team recent defensive shortcomings. But they were able to overcome the deficit, first through a goal by Mondaini in the 58th minute, and followed up with the winner in the 61st minute by Estupinan.

Ok, so it's just the reserve league, but like I said, perhaps it can buoy the club into the main event on the weekend and reverse the result from earlier this season. At any rate, congrats to the Goats today!
