Today, more details emerged about the opening of the 2012 MLS season. Several of the opening weekend's matches will be on national television, including the one for Chivas USA. The Goats will open the campaign at the Home Depot Center March 11 at 4 pm PT against the Houston Dynamo. The match will be broadcast on Galavision, which is logical since both teams have pretty substantial bilingual fanbases.
The Dynamo will be trying to immediately exorcise some of the demons from 2011 at the Home Depot Center. They had three losses in three appearances this calendar year, losing to the Galaxy in the regular season 1-0, losing to Chivas 3-0, and losing again to the Galaxy 1-0 in the MLS Cup Final just a few weeks ago. As the surprise Cup runners-up, they will be looking to prove they deserved to be in that position.Meanwhile, Chivas will be looking to start the season on a good note. Last year, they sputtered out of the gates, and took a solid month or so before they seemed to start clicking as a team on the field. Splitting the season series in 2011 with Houston, Chivas have a tough, though not impossible test ahead of them. Of course, the person most responsible for their victory over the Dynamo last season, Justin Braun, is no longer with Chivas. Hopefully the team is able to score and defend from day one of the season.
Besides the Chivas-Dynamo matchup, several other games are taking place during the first weekend of the season. The Vancouver Whitecaps will host the Montreal Impact in their first MLS match on March 10 (the announcement lists TSN, a Canadian network, as the broadcaster, so no word if that match will be available on American television - probably not). NBC Sports will kick off their MLS coverage with FC Dallas hosting the New York Red Bulls in a rematch of the Wild Card playoff match in 2011 on March 11. Finally, the Portland Timbers will host the Philadelphia Union on ESPN2 on March 12. No word at this point if any other opening weekend matches will be broadcast on national television.
