In news that Chivas USA and Los Angeles Galaxy fans alike will appreciate, apparently Chivas' front office is seriously looking to move the Goats out of the Home Depot Center. In a story posted today by Adam Serrano on the league's website, Chivas are looking at several locations around Los Angeles County, and need to find a location they will stay permanently. And to shut up the critics who do not think Chivas should stay in Los Angeles, the ownership group reiterated their commitment to LA, and said they have no plans to move the team to San Diego or anywhere else.
So is this what Chivas need? In the long term, absolutely. It is tedious to hear Galaxy fans taunt Chivas fans about playing in 'their' stadium. It would be great if the Goats settled in or around the east side of LA, because my hunch is that it would be most convenient for fans and would help draw more fans in. The location of the Home Depot Center, Carson, is frankly not very close to the city itself and sits in a no-man's land between LA and Long Beach. So moving to a different part of the suburbs, either east of the city or in the downtown/Eastside of the city itself makes the most sense. Westside? Forget it, the fanbase by and large doesn't live over there, and traveling to games would be a nightmare. And it probably won't be near the Staples Center area, as AEG owns and controls that area, so don't get your hopes up about that.
What about the stadium itself? Here's where I am a bit more apprehensive. Is Antonio Cue and company willing to build a world-class stadium? As far as I know, there are no capable vacant stadiums currently sitting around the area. So the implication would be that they would build a stadium. Considering their reputation around MLS as a team that does not spend money, I wonder how serious this is and how soon Chivas fans can look forward to a move. But in the meantime, I will remain cautiously optimistic.
