Yesterday, the senior United States Men's National Team faced the USMNT U23 team in a scrimmage at the Home Depot Center, which was won 4-0 by the senior squad. Both teams are in the midst of training camps, the senior team for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela January 21 in Phoenix, and against Panama in Panama City January 25. Meanwhile, the U23s are getting ready for the Olympic Qualifying tournament in March, but they have a few scrimmages lined up in Costa Rica following a second scrimmage against the senior side scheduled for Tuesday.
The goals Friday were scored by Chris Wondolowski, Benny Feilhaber, Teal Bunbury and Graham Zusi. Chivas USA had two players in the scrimmage, on either side: Heath Pearce with the senior team, and Jorge Villafaña with the U23s. The club teammates did not face each other directly, however, as Pearce played the first 45 minutes of the match, and Villafaña the second half. Our friend Adam Serrano was at the scrimmage and has a good report on it for the Soccer By Ives website. Check it out here. He doesn't mention either Pearce or Villafaña at all in the report, except in naming the lineups, so I guess neither played outstanding or terrible. We'll see what happens in the next scrimmage. On the USMNT front, take a look at this journal entry from Heath Pearce on the U.S. Soccer website during "Camp Cupcake." Makes the nickname of the annual camp seem pretty ironic, right? Now that I think about it, that was probably the point.
We'll keep you posted if we hear more about Chivas players at the international level.
