A second half goal by Hagop Chirishian made the difference in Chivas USA's first preseason match, as the Ventura County Fusion defeated Chivas 1-0 Friday. The game was a 60 minute match played at Oxnard College, where Chivas have been training this week, their second week of 2012 preseason training. According to this article by Joe Curley on the Ventura County Star's website, Chirishian is a player who is basically giving a career in professional soccer his last shot, and he may yet have more chances yet to impress over the next several weeks as the Fusion are scheduled to host several more MLS sides in preseason training.
While Chivas' fans will be disappointed for their side starting the preseason off with a loss, a lot of trialists and Supplemental Draftees featured in the game. Here were Chivas' lineups at the top of the match and at halftime:
First half: Tim Melia; James Riley, Rauwshan McKenzie, John Alexander Valencia, Ante Jazic; Peter Vagenas, Marvin Iraheta, Michael Lahoud, Nick LaBrocca, Ryan Smith; Juan Pablo AngelSecond half: Kevin Guppy; Mario Ledesma, Greg Vanney, Daniel Steres, R.J. Allen, Kennedy Chongo, Ciaran O'Brien, Marco Delgado, Kevin Venegas, Ben Spencer*
*I couldn't find who the 11th player was in the second half, so the lineup is missing a player
Most names for the Goats are either squad players or have been identified as trialists and recent additions, but one player, forward Kennedy Chongo, is also on trial with the team. As reported by Scott French over at ESPN, Chongo is from Zambia but played collegiate soccer at Biola University. He's also played for the USL-PDL's Southern California Seahorses (I know, but at least it's unique, right?). We'll see if he makes a lasting impression on the coaching staff.
French reported that SuperDraft selectee Casey Townsend has a hamstring injury, which probably explains why he didn't see any game action. And recent signing Marvin Iraheta suffered a knee injury during the first half and had to be substituted, according to Adam Serrano on twitter, who was at the match, although the severity of the injury is not currently known.
Finally, Serrano reported, also on twitter, that the match will be shown tonight at 7 pm on KADYTV.com, so if you want to see the match for yourself, check it out! Feel free to comment on what you see in the comment section here below.
