The eldest teams in the Chivas USA Youth Academy got back to U.S. Soccer Development Academy league play this past weekend, and faced a tough test in playing Real Salt Lake's Arizona-based academy team. These teams have some history as some of the current staff for the Chivas Academy formerly worked for RSL's Academy, and then there is the still-sticky business of standout forward Ben Spencer's homegrown rights. With both academies being strong in recent seasons, the match-up was sure to be difficult.

Well, the young Goats were dealt a blow in both of their matches as the U18s played to a scoreless draw. On TopDrawerSoccer.com, the game was described as "blasé," which may have come in part from the heat, while the club's official website noted that Chivas wasted some good chances in the match. The result leaves Chivas in a four-way tie for first place in the USSDA's Southwest division, with RSL, Strikers FC, and the LA Galaxy, but keep in mind that there have only been three matches played by most of the teams in the division.

Meanwhile, the U16s had a day to forget in a 7-2 defeat to RSL. Axel Mendez scored in the 35th minute to cut the lead, and Jorge Ruiz added a consolation goal in the 58th minute, but a hat trick by Sebastian Saucedo paced the home side. The stinging defeat leaves the Chivas U16s in sixth place in the Southwest Division, but again, keep in mind that there have only been three matches played so far this season.

Both teams will be back in action October 14 against the Galaxy. Will the two weeks give Chivas a chance to reflect and work and get a result against the big rivals? We'll find out soon.
