In news that is becoming pleasantly familiar, Chivas USA midfielder/defender Jorge Villafaña was announced today to the roster of the latest U.S. Men's National Team U23 Training Camp. This marks the third straight camp that Villafaña has been named to in the past few months, so it seems he has staying power and is still in the running to get called into competitive games - most notably the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament that begins next month. While I had low expectations at first, let's be honest: if he doesn't get called up for the tournament it will be kind of heartbreaking.
The training camp is set to last ten days, from this Sunday to February 29, when the U23s will take on their Mexican counterpart in Dallas, a match that is scheduled to be televised on Univision. The camp will be held in Texas, with scrimmages against FC Dallas (Feb. 22) and the NASL's San Antonio Scorpions (Feb. 24) planned. Here is the entire roster, including the players' clubs:
Defenders: Greg Garza (Club Tijuana), Perry Kitchen (D.C. United), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Ike Opara (San Jose Earthquakes), Kofi Sarkodie (Houston Dynamo), Zarek Valentin (Montreal Impact), Jorge Villafana (Chivas USA)
Forwards: Freddy Adu (Philadelphia Union), Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Tony Taylor (Estoril Praia)
