A small but potentially significant news item for you: Goalkeeper Patrick McLain has been signed by Chivas USA, as confirmed by Adam Serrano on MLSsoccer.com. The 23 year old is a Wisconsin native but played collegiate soccer at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He was in a three-way battle for the number 3 goalkeeper slot during the preseason with former Chivas keeper Kevin Guppy and 2012 Supplemental Draftee and UCLA grad Brian Rowe. As a result of the move, none of Chivas' supplemental draft picks this year were ultimately signed by the Goats. It remains to be seen if any of them will find success with other teams or in other leagues.

As the third goalkeeper on the depth chart, McLain will likely see little to no time this season unless Dan Kennedy and Tim Melia are both injured and/or suspended. McLain is here for depth, to work in training and the reserve matches when Melia doesn't feature. Still, it is nice to see Chivas wrap up another component of the roster, and with Kennedy's position in the lineup assured at this point, McLain will probably not make much of an impact with the first team in 2012. Beyond that, who knows?

And maybe if McLain is a American football fan, and Rauwshan McKenzie and Casey Townsend are likewise, perhaps there will be some good-natured Big Ten or NFC North rivalries on the team. They all have midwestern ties.
