The latest edition of SB Nation's MLS Power Rankings is hot off the interweb's metaphorical presses, and the big story regarding Chivas USA is that they moved up. Not just a spot, but four whole positions! I guess respect is starting to be paid to the Goats after winning two tough road matches so far this season (and playing the teams at home very closely). Last week they were in 18th place, which I thought was kind of baloney, but this week they have rebounded to 14th overall.
Chivas currently sit above Toronto FC (who have now fallen to the very bottom of the standings, and will be Chivas' next opponent), the Philadelphia Union, the Montreal Impact, the New England Revolution, and the Portland Timbers. Just ahead of Chivas is the Columbus Crew (13th) and Chicago Fire(12th). Both teams haven't really demonstrated their true level, and in the case of Chicago that's because they have had two byes so far (which is pretty nonsensical, in my opinion). But you know, the SBN hive mind needs to see more before ranking the Goats even higher. At the top of the rankings, there's a bit of movement, with Sporting Kansas City (1st) and Real Salt Lake (2nd) swapping spots. The Seattle Sounders are still hanging on at 3rd, and while they have quality, they have had a couple of rough games in a row. But the San Jose Earthquakes are at 4th, believe it or not, and they deserve to be there. Considering Chivas and the Quakes were in a similar position in the offseason with rebuilding projects while keeping their coaches, it's a shot across the bow to Chivas and a motivation to keep on getting results.
