Remember how last week I commented that the SB Nation hive mind wasn't particularly impressed with Chivas USA's win over Real Salt Lake? Well, unfortunately Chivas' performance against Sporting Kansas City didn't help their prospects of moving up in the SB Nation MLS power rankings, as they dropped a slot to 18th. Only the expansion Montreal Impact stand in their way at the very bottom. At this point, they look safe as Montreal has performed much like many expected they would, but seriously - not like that's any big accomplishment.
At the same time, would you argue with the ranking for the Goats? I think both the Philadelphia Union (now in 17th) and Toronto FC (in 16th) are in the same boat as Chivas, and Chivas could be above both of them. But beyond that is the New England Revolution, on a two-match winning streak. And D.C. United thrashed FC Dallas last week. So at the highest, I think 16th is their absolute ceiling at the moment, unfortunately. Perhaps if they get some results this month, they can finally start climbing. At the top of the rankings is Real Salt Lake, which continues to make Chivas' win impressive, followed by Sporting Kansas City. Mirroring yesterday's article about Chivas having the toughest schedule in the league so far, the other two opponents Chivas have faced so far this season are in the Top 10 of the power rankings. The Houston Dynamo sit in 4th, while the Vancouver Whitecaps are in 9th. So the stats show these teams to be very good, and the impressions show likewise. This week's opponent, the Portland Timbers, are in 11th place in the power rankings this week, so the prospects for Chivas improve a little. But Chivas need to capitalize on the opportunity.
