Chivatown Post: USOC Venue Announced Edition

It's been a little while since our last news round-up, so let's catch up on some of the latest goings-on around Chivatown!

First, more information has emerged about the quarterfinal U.S. Open Cup game June 26 against the Charlotte Eagles. Chivas USA will host Charlotte that evening at Cal State Fullerton, their third Open Cup match at the local college. The U.S. Open Cup website's twitter account noted yesterday that Chivas are 2-0 in those previous matches at Titan Stadium. Ticket information for the match has not been fully revealed yet, so we'll let you know when we hear more.

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Union fired/accepted the resignation of coach Peter Nowak, replacing him with assistant coach John Hackworth on an interim basis. Unsurprisingly, Chivas defender Danny Califf was asked for comment about the changes at his former team, and he spoke with Adam Serrano on the league website today. While he hinted at the well-known culture of mind games present under Nowak's regime, Califf remained respectful and complimentary towards Hackworth. It's a tough season for Union fans, but certainly fans of Chivas, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers are thrilled to enjoy the fruits of Nowak's puzzling personnel moves the past year.

Homegrown signing Marky Delgado is biding his time waiting to make his professional debut, but he has to wait until August. In the meantime, he's been playing for Chivas' reserves, and as Adam Serrano discusses, he played as a right back last week in Chivas' reserve team victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. I think the coaches are trying Delgado out a a few different positions to see what might be the best fit for the teenager.

Englishman Ryan Smith is following - wait for it - England at the Euro 2012 tournament, according to Serrano from another story on the league website yesterday. Credit to Smith, he admits what everybody else, even the most diehard England fan knows, that the Three Lions are a decent but not great team.

In that same article, Serrano reports the three Chivas USA Youth Academy players who have gotten recent call ups to the U.S. youth national teams. Defender Adonis Amaya and forward Bradford Jamieson, both of whom have been part of the U.S. youth residency program in Bradenton, Florida, have been called up by the USMNT U17 team to head to Costa Rica in the Copa Saprissa tournament. In addition, Malcolm Jones has been called up to the U15 team ahead of the Copa Mexico tournament. Congratulations to all three!

On Monday, Gavin Day talked to Ante Jazic for MLSsoccer.com about his Canadian national team duty. It seems the defender credits living in California as a crucial reason for his longevity on the pitch. No wonder California is such a popular place!

Jorge Villafana recently became a father, as he's been tweeting since the birth of his daughter. Over at the blog on the club's official website, Olivia Cervantes spoke with Villafana about the new addition in his life, and features an adorable picture of the new papa and little Arely. Happy Father's Day Jorge!

There's a nice profile of Casey Townsend from today by Daniel Gallen on The Diamondback, the University of Maryland's student newspaper. Besides discussing Townsend's college days, we get some insight about his formative years in Traverse City, Michigan. As somebody who has spent considerable time in Traverse City, I can vouch that although the town is a metropolis by Northern Michigan standards, less than 15,000 people live there. In other words, it takes a remarkable person to get the attention to reach the heights Townsend already has in his career.

Over at ESPN LA, Scott French reports that Chivas' 2012 Supplemental Draft pick Daniel Steres has been picked up by the Seattle Sounders and is expected to sign with them soon. In addition to seeing Steres through the preseason before cutting him, Chivas played Steres last month in the U.S. Open Cup as he was a member of the Ventura County Fusion. Playing in midfield (he is normally regarded as a defender), Steres was impressive in that match, and Seattle apparently feel he could be useful for them. Will Chivas regret not offering Steres a contract? At any rate, congrats to Steres for making his dreams of becoming a pro a reality.

Former Chivas defender Jonathan Bornstein's Mexican saga continues. After the announcement that Bornstein would go on loan from Tigres to Atlante next season, Tom Marshall reports on MLSsoccer.com that terms have not been finalized and Bornstein could stay with Tigres after all. Atlante has a new coach, Ricardo La Volpe, and perhaps Bornstein is not in his plans, or perhaps there was a snag with the financial terms. At any rate, it seems clear that Bornstein needs to move somewhere as he's not getting playing time with Tigres, and that situation does not look to be changing.
