Last week wasn't the greatest in Chivas USA's history. They had only one match, in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, and that didn't go very well. They had the week off in MLS, and I suspected they would slide further in the SB Nation MLS Power Rankings this week, just because they fly under the radar and they haven't played very attractive soccer lately. But a tiny surprise occurred, as Chivas remain in 15th place again this week in the Power Rankings. The hive mind didn't think any of the teams immediately ahead of them, including the Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids, slipped enough for Chivas to overtake them in a bye week.
That seems fair. Chivas have had a half season of ups and downs, and they'll need to step it up in the second half if they have any hope of joining the playoff hunt in earnest. I think they have the potential to be sitting much higher than 15th, but they need to impress many first. A good start would be a week where they have an opportunity to get six points against Western Conference rivals in the Portland Timbers (currently sitting in the basement of the Power Rankings) and the LA Galaxy (currently sitting in 10th after spanking the Timbers last weekend in Portland). If Chivas can get two wins, they'll move up the table and should gain some more respect. But they'll need to perform well.
No surprise, but the San Jose Earthquakes are at the top of the heap again this week after demolishing Real Salt Lake 5-0 last week. This may be them playing at their peak, and they may find tougher sledding in the second half of the season, but they appear poised to be a championship contender this season.
