Contrary to my predictions last week that Chivas USA would drop further in the SB Nation MLS Power Rankings due to their bye week, the hive mind zagged instead and moved them up one place to 14th overall. Occasionally, bye weeks cause voters to remember teams that haven't played in a more positive light, an "absence makes the heart grow fonder" attitude, if you will. But considering Chivas are back in the position that the rest of the league thinks they're terrible, despite only losing one match in nearly two months, I assumed the hive mind would forget all about them. Instead, the Montreal Impact slipped below the Goats, and Chivas can now get back to the business of getting results.
One of the reasons why Chivas didn't slip this week is that only one team in the West really gained much ground in last weekend's matches. Only the Colorado Rapids, who entered last week tied on points with Chivas, won, and so they moved up to fifth in the Western Conference standings. The LA Galaxy, who entered last weekend a point ahead of Chivas, lost a wild 4-3 match to the San Jose Earthquakes, so the LA-based teams are still neck and neck. And the Portland Timbers lost, and considering they were only three points behind Chivas, that loss was great for the Goats' chances of staying ahead. Really, all things considered, the bye week couldn't have gone much better for Chivas' position in the table. At the head of the SBN Power Rankings again this week is the Earthquakes, who certainly deserve their spot. I still can't make up my mind whether to be happy for them finally seeing success again, or whether I should be territorial and dislike them because they represent NorCal. Perhaps these are the nuances only a native Californian would understand.
And Chivas' opponent this Saturday, the Vancouver Whitecaps, are sitting in 7th in the Power Rankings. Their good run seems to be continuing, but Chivas have a chance at revenge for the dire loss earlier this season at the Home Depot Center. Let's hope the coaching staff is preparing the team a little differently this time around compared to the last break the team had in 2012.
