In amidst a midweek game for Chivas USA, news quietly emerged this evening that Jorge Vergara and his wife Angelica Fuentes have bought out the ownership shares of the Cue family and now have complete ownership over Chivas USA. A press release was issued by the club during the match against the New England Revolution, so needless to say, this was not supposed to come at a prime news period. What this means for the future of Chivas USA, however, is anybody's guess.
The Vergaras have owned a 50 percent stake in Chivas USA since the club was formed in 2004, and it represented an expansion of their growing soccer club empire in the Americas, as they also own Chivas de Guadalajara and Costa Rican power Saprissa.*
Will this move change Chivas USA's fortunes for the better? What changes may take place to how the club is run? Will Vergara take a more active role in his American team? There are many questions with this move, and we'll have more about this change in the coming days and weeks. For now, let's all just ponder over what's happened.
* On Wednesday I wrote that the Vergaras owned Saprissa. A reader reminded me that they sold that club last year. The original text remains in the article but has been crossed out. Apologies on the mistake.
