A pair of Chivas USA Youth Academy products were recently called up to a United States Men's National Team U18 training camp in Europe, and performed well in the team's matches. Forward Ben Spencer scored in the United States' 4-2 victory over the Netherlands U18 National Team last week in the Netherlands. Although the U18 team does not play in competitive tournaments for FIFA, the win has to be seen as a good accomplishment for the U.S., considering the quality of the Dutch side at senior level.
Meanwhile, homegrown signing Marky Delgado, who is eligible now to play for Chivas' first team but who hasn't made his debut yet at least in part because he was away with the USMNT U18s, played a pivotal role in the next two matches. After starting in the 4-2 win over Holland, he also got the game-winning assist on the United States' 1-0 win over the Borussia Dortmund U18 squad, setting up Michael Amick in the Americans' only shot of the game. Again, it has to be considered a good result, as Dortmund are two-time defending champs at senior level in the Bundesliga, and many of their key players have come through the youth set-up there. In the USMNT's final match, they fell 3-1 to the Club Brugge U18s. Despite the loss, Delgado set up Amick once again off a free kick to tie the game in the first half. The Americans couldn't put away the Belgian side, but two wins out of three were a good tally for the squad.
Also, the performances by Delgado and Spencer have to be promising for their prospects of continuing on with the National Team. Spencer only featured in the first match, but getting a goal is good for the forward, while Delgado started all three games and tallied two assists. Congrats to both! Keep up the good work!
