Rumor: Deportes Tolima Signs John Valencia

It looks like the defender is headed back to his native Colombia.

It looks like Valencia is one and done with MLS.

Following up on the article I wrote last week about Chivas USA defender John Valencia possibly departing the team, comes more reports from Colombia. Colombian-based news site El Pueblo is reporting that Liga Postobon club Deportes Tolima have signed Valencia (Spanish). There was no word in the article about the terms of the deal, and there is no word on the club's official website at the moment, although an unofficial website had the report. I would venture to guess that Valencia was either on a one-year deal with Chivas or his club option for 2013 was declined. Of course, Chivas has not released any details or discussed any player matters publicly so far this offseason.

Those who read this site regularly know that I was not a particular fan of Valencia. Although he had some success in Colombia, and he was an experienced 30, he struggled mightily, and except for his penchant for making goal line clearances, his showings with the Goats in 2012 did not indicate he would round into form in MLS. Although the move demonstrates more player personnel upheaval at the club, I don't think this loss will adversely affect the Goats. It is clear, however, that the team needs center backs, and upgrades at that, so hopefully the club is working on that as we speak.
