Chivas USA midfielder/defender Marky Delgado was called up to the U.S. Men's National Team U-20 training camp, to be held November 10-20 in Italy, the club announced Friday. Delgado, 18, is getting his first selection to the age group, after playing for the U-17 and U-18 national teams in recent years.
While in Italy, the U.S. will play friendlies against Hellas Verona's academy, Iran's U-20 National Team, and at least one other unnamed team. The apparent purpose of the trip is for U-20 coach Tab Ramos to start to get acquainted with the age cohort ahead of U-20 World Cup qualification, which will likely take place in early 2015 ahead of the 2015 World Cup in New Zealand.
Delgado was selected as a midfielder for this camp, and it will be interesting to see what position he plays if he continues to get called up next year. Although he signed his first pro contract as a midfielder, Chivas USA head coach Jose Luis Real opted to play him as a fullback for a substantial portion of his minutes in the 2013 season.
Additionally, Delgado's former Chivas USA Academy teammate, forward Ben Spencer, was also called up to the U-20 camp. You may recall that Spencer signed with Norwegian champions Molde earlier this year, and has recently seen first team action for his club.
Congrats to the Goats, past and present, who were called up, and best of luck at the camp!
