Chivas USA: Set to make another USOC run in 2013?

The 2013 U.S. Open Cup is here! Last night, the tournament proper got underway, with the teams in the lower echelons of the U.S. soccer pyramid duking it out to see who would advance to the next round. Following that, U.S. Soccer announced this afternoon the draw for the USOC 2nd and 3rd rounds of the tournament. The American MLS clubs enter the competition in the 3rd round, scheduled for May 28 or May 29.

Depending on who wins the 2nd round meeting between the LA Blues and the Ventura County Fusion next Tuesday, Chivas will face the winner May 28. Neither game will be a "home" game, although either game would be within reasonable driving distance, especially the Blues match, which would be at Titan Stadium at Cal State Fullerton, where the Goats "hosted" their only USOC game in 2012, a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Eagles in the quarterfinal round. If the Fusion prevail, the match will be held at Ventura College, and you may also recall that Chivas USA began their Open Cup tournament last season against them, winning 1-0.

The Goats have two weekend games bracketing the USOC match, May 25 against the Colorado Rapids and June 1 against the Seattle Sounders. The Colorado game will be on the road, the Sounders match at home, so there will be a bit of traveling that week, but it shouldn't be excessive.

The Goats have been semifinalists in two of the last three tournaments - can they meet that level or even perhaps surpass it? We'll have to see, starting in two weeks time, but hopefully the Goats can make another good run in the 100th running of the tournament.
