Amidst another busy week in Chivatown, a pair of Chivas USA players are continuing to impress on the international youth stage. First, Marky Delgado concluded his run on the U.S. U-18 team, as they finished up the Lisbon tournament over the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Hungary, their only loss of the tournament. Delgado captained the side through all three matches, and sprung the Americans on the play that led to their goal in the match, ultimately scored by Club Tijuana's Paul Arriola.
The result means the United States finished the Lisbon tournament in second place. Delgado was on the bench Tuesday for the U.S. Open Cup match against the LA Blues, but did not feature in the game. Regardless, congrats to Marky on the good showing abroad!
In other news, Mexico opened group play in the warm-up Toulon tournament today, defeating Nigeria 2-0. Not only did Chivas USA forward Julio Morales start for El Tri, he scored the first goal, in the 27th minute, when he capitalized on a poor clearance inside of Nigeria's box and chipped the goalkeeper from close range. He played 56 minutes in the match, and Mexico doubled its lead in the 73rd minute with a sharp strike from Santos Laguna midfielder Jose Abella. The win starts the tournament nicely for Mexico, the defending champs, and they'll look to continue their strong start against a tough opponent, Brazil, on Friday.
Here are video highlights of Mexico's goals today. Well done to Julio!
