Another month, and another surprise of sorts, as midfielder Josue Soto was selected Chivas USA's Player of the Month for May 2013 by the readers of this website. Similar to last month, the winner beat the field by a significant margin, in this case Soto won with 42 percent of the vote, doubling the vote count for the second place selection, Dan Kennedy.
Soto played a total of four matches during the month, three starts and one substitute appearance, for a total of 203 minutes. Dividing his time between midfield and defense during that stretch, Soto could not help the Goats gain a point in any of his league appearances (against the Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, and Colorado Rapids) but he did start in the U.S. Open Cup win over the LA Blues, although he only played 21 minutes in that match before being substituted for Eric Avila, presumably to provide Chivas USA with more attacking options.
With Chelís out as coach and Jose Luis Real in, it is hard to know if Soto will continue to see regular action, although a rocket of a goal in Chivas' reserve league match last week against the Vancouver Whitecaps may persuade Real to give him some playing time. Still, in May, he was the choice of the voters. Congratulations to Josue! And be sure to vote when June's poll rolls around!
April 2013 winner: Steve Purdy
March 2013 winner(s): Juan Agudelo, Eric Avila, Dan Kennedy
