Chivas USA have announced Monday that they have obtained U.S. international and former USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra through the Allocation Order. With Chivas sitting in the 15th slot in the order, they had to make a trade to bring it together: they traded their 1st round SuperDraft pick in 2015 and an international roster slot through 2014 to Toronto FC, who were atop the Allocation Ranking, in exchange for the top slot and subsequently Bocanegra's rights.

Bocanegra, 34, is returning to MLS from nearly 10 years spent playing in Europe. He was last with Racing Santander in Spain, but has also played for Rangers in Scotland, Fulham in England, and French clubs Rennes and St. Etienne. While with the Chicago Fire from 2000-04, Bocanegra was twice named MLS Defender of the Year, and was named MLS Rookie of the Year.

On the international front, Bocanegra has represented the USMNT at full senior level 110 times, starting for the Americans in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and captaining the side through much of the past several years. Although his international future is somewhat in doubt, he has represented the U.S. as recently as this past spring.

In a statement, Bocanegra said the following:

"I'm very excited to join the club," stated Bocanegra. "I know it's going to be a big challenge because the club hasn't been getting the greatest results on the field but it's something I'm looking forward to. The club has made me feel very welcomed and did a big effort to have me sign with the club so that I'll be able to help try to turn the team around into being on the positive foot.

"It feels really good to be coming back home. I've been following MLS a lot more closely this year, and I got my start here in the League, so I'm excited to seeing personally how much the League has grown. I've noticed how it's grown so much by following it on TV and the internet, but actually being out there on the field and being able to compete make me excited to see how the level has gotten better and how it's grown," concluded the recently signed defender.

Bocanegra will first be eligible July 12 against the Philadelphia Union, as long as his paperwork is fully updated by that point.

We will have more coverage on this move over the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, what do you think about the signing of Bocanegra?
