Carlos Bocanegra will miss Philadelphia Union match

It will be at least one more game until he makes his debut.

Kevork Djansezian

I hesitated to even mention new Chivas USA defender Carlos Bocanegra in my match preview, since I wasn't sure if he would be physically ready to start today against the Philadelphia Union, but it seems that is a moot point. Bocanegra will not make his Chivas debut today, because his paperwork is not squared away. In particular, his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) has not arrived yet from Rangers. Lest you think the Goats may have been lackadaisical on this front, it seems they could not ask for the ITC officially until the Transfer Window opened, which happened Tuesday, and it still hasn't physically arrived.

As a result, the Goats will likely have Mario de Luna and Walter Vilchez as the centerback tandem against the Union. The duo have played well in recent matches, and will get at least one more chance to impress Chivas coach Jose Luis Real before Bocanegra can officially enter the lineup.

Of course, it is also unclear at the moment what Bocanegra's fitness level is, though he could be ready to go for the Goats' next match, which will be Wednesday against Toronto FC. We'll keep you posted on news that emerges in the meantime.
