LA Galaxy pick up Academy coach Mike Munoz; Laurent Courtois also in training with Galaxy

The flow is reversing, and taking some good Goats...

Munoz: No longer with the Goats.
Munoz: No longer with the Goats.

Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy of course share a stadium, and are the only teams in MLS to share a market at the moment. There has been a lot of movement between the teams over the years, much of it of Galaxy players who make their way to Chivas, although that flow has shifted in recent years, what with David Junior Lopes and Andrew Boyens moving across the hall and winning MLS Cups with the Galaxy.

Well, that flow continues, as two interesting moves have emerged. First, former player and Academy coach Mike Munoz has rejoined the Galaxy's Academy, becoming their U-16 head coach, after working with Chivas since 2011. He originally worked for the Galaxy U-16 team, before moving to the Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy, and then moving to Chivas with Robin Fraser and Greg Vanney. Munoz had been a very busy presence with Chivas, especially this year, as he was head coach of the U-16s, assistant coach of the U-18s, assistant coach of the U-23 amateur team (of which concrete information is still very hard to find), and he even assisted Academy director Sacha van der Most during his two games in charge as interim manager of the first team last month.

The story was reported by J.R. Eskilson of Top Drawer Soccer on twitter yesterday. Neither Chivas nor the Galaxy have issued any kind of release about the move, and I'm not really expecting anything from Chivas' side, to be honest.

One of the reverberations from Munoz's departure will be to see if he brings any Chivas USA Academy players with him to the Galaxy. Although both teams have signed Homegrown players this year, Munoz was well-regarded and is seen as one of the best Academy coaches in the region, if not the country.

In other news, former Chivas USA midfielder Laurent Courtois, who was cut from the team last week immediately after he scored a goal, is in training, also with the LA Galaxy. Adam Serrano was present at Galaxy training and spotted the Frenchman practicing with the team, and spoke with Galaxy Assistant Coach Dave Sarachan about Courtois' prospects. From the initial sounds of it, I wouldn't say Courtois signing with the Galaxy is necessarily imminent, but it's a possibility. Of course, Courtois made it clear he didn't want to abruptly quit playing last week, so maybe he'll get a chance to go out on his own terms after all.

From a Chivas USA perspective, it is hard to see both Munoz and Courtois go, as both had become valuable members of the Chivatown community. I know some of you won't want to send good wishes to either man, since they are dealing with the Galaxy, but I have to say, for me, I wish both Mike and Laurent all the best.
