On Friday, August 30th, Chivas USA announced Martin Ponce will be leaving Chivas USA to return club Chivas Guadalajara. The midfielder had been on loan with Chivas USA since May 10, 2013.
When Martin "Aarón" Ponce was acquired, Chelis has this to say about him:
"Aarón, I like him a lot ... He is in the position where we don't have any players like him. I can't compare him with anybody. I can't say he's better or worse than anyone else because I don't have anyone like him."
Perhaps it was Ponce's lack of comparability in the end sabotaged his time in Carson.
Or that in his first two matches, away at the Portland Timbers and home against Real Salt Lake, Chivas conceded seven goals and scoring only one. In those matches, Ponce played 121 minutes with a start and an substitute appearance.
Since the loss to RSL on May 19th, Ponce has made three substitute appearances for a total of 49 minutes.
For the first time all season, Jose Luis Real presented that same starting eleven. Pairing Erick Torres up top with an additional striker curtails the midfield to four spots. Given that Real plays with a four-man backfield, Chivas USA only hasfour midfield spots among its plethoric stable of midfielders (Carlos Borja, Bryan de la Fuente, Oswaldo Minda, Eric Avila, Carlos Alvarez, Edgar Mejia, Gabriel Farfan).
If CD Guadalajara's mission in loaning Ponce to Chivas USA was for to further his development, it was stymied by the Ponce's inability to get onto the field.
