2014 MLS Draft: Chivas USA select Thomas McNamara from Clemson University

A surprising selection from the Goats.

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The Wilmer Cabrera era began in earnest Thursday, as Chivas USA selected midfielder Thomas McNamara from Clemson University with their first pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft at number 20 overall.

McNamara, 22, spent five years in college, with the first four at Brown University before moving to Clemson for his final year to join his coach at the ACC school. In his senior season, he scored six goals and provided seven assists. The New York native is an attacking midfielder, with a basic scouting report available here.

Perhaps most notably, McNamara has the best/worst hair in this year's draft class, with a floppy mullet. In fact, if you look at his college highlight video, he has the look of a classic quirky Argentine midfielder, with a wide body, good skills, and a crazy hairstyle.

Chivas won't have any more selections today, unless they trade for more picks in the second round, as the remaining two rounds of the SuperDraft will take place next week.
