Are Chivas about to double the number of Argentine midfielders on their roster?

Pelletieri recently left Racing.

A new rumor has started making the rounds today, and that concerns 31-year-old defensive midfielder Agustin Pelletieri. Supposedly, the Argentine, who has recently left Racing Club in his native country, is on his way to Chivas USA, despite earlier reports that he was going to join the gaggle of compatriots assembled in Portland. Of course, Chivas do have a new player on their roster who is also a native of Argentina, Mauro Rosales.

I've been trying to track down a written report on this rumor, since so far I've only found it on twitter. As a result, I must stress this is very much a rumor and for the moment is far from a story with any legs, since twitter can essentially become an echo chamber of rumormongering.

At any rate, here's a little about Pelletieri: he's had a stable club career, only having played for three clubs previously. After getting his start in his domestic league with Lanus in 2002, he remained with the team for nearly a decade, winning the 2007 Apertura title with them. In 2008, he went on loan for a season to Greek club AEK Athens, but returned to Lanus despite playing regularly in Europe.

In 2011, Pelletieri moved to Racing, a popular team that has suffered considerable instability in recent times. He played regularly there, but given the situation at the club and in the Argentine Primera in general, it appears he's looking for a new home.

He did tell an Argentine broadcaster recently that he was going to MLS, but he wasn't sure which team he was going to end up with (Spanish). Given the group of Argentines with the Timbers, I guess folks just assumed he'd be another to add to the bunch, but perhaps he'll end up settling farther south along the West Coast.

Again, however, let me emphasize -- this is a rumor and given the fact that no news outlets have decided to write up an article on it yet, the story has no legs at the moment. Maybe if more developments arise, we'll find out if Pelletieri will be the next addition to the "New New Era" Chivas USA side.
