Colorado Rapids assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera has been named head coach of Chivas USA, the club announced Thursday. The 46-year-old will lead his first MLS side, though he has head coaching experience at the youth level, as boss of the U.S. Men's National Team U-17 team from 2007-2012.

The Colombian played between 1985 and 2005, mostly in Colombia but with stints in Argentina with Independiente and Costa Rica with Herediano. He finished his career in the United States after moving here in 2004, playing for the Long Island Rough Riders before retiring in 2005. He was also an international for Colombia, representing his country at senior level 48 times between 1989 and 1998.

After being dismissed as U.S. U-17 coach, he joined Oscar Pareja's coaching staff in Colorado, where he worked the past two seasons. With Pareja reported to be out and on his way at some point to FC Dallas, Cabrera's job security was likely in danger anyway.
