Chivas USA waive defender Carlos Borja

The first player to have three tours of duty with Chivas USA's first team, Carlos Borja, has been waived, the club announced on Thursday. Borja, 26, joined Chivas for this latest stint ahead of the 2013 season, where he played 28 games last year across all competitions. He had not played in any of the Goats' three competitive games in 2014.

It appeared pretty quickly during the preseason that Borja was at the bottom in Wilmer Cabrera's depth chart, as he saw little action at both his "regular" position of right back, as well as his "new" position of defensive midfielder. In fact, one could say the writing was on the wall with not only the signing of Andrew Ribeiro as full back depth, but also the conversion of midfielder Eric Avila to starting right back.

Last season, Borja was mostly used as a holding mid, where he wasn't particularly convincing. With Oswaldo Minda back, and the signings of Agustin Pelletieri and Daniel Fragoso, plus the move of Marky Delgado to central midfield, Borja didn't really have much of a chance of getting playing time in 2014.

Still, Borja is a nice guy, and it's tough to see him leave. We'll always have that sweet pass he made to set up Carlos Alvarez's equalizer in the first SuperClasico last year. Hopefully he can find a soft landing. We wish him the best.
