Ecuador's Enner Valencia scored twice to give Ecuador a 2-1 win over Honduras on Friday. Carlo Costly scored Honduras' first goal in the World Cup since 1982, but it wasn't enough to hold off the South Americans.
This may not have been the prettiest soccer we've seen this tournament but it was definitely a good matchup. Both teams knew a win was a must to prevent elimination.
Chivas USA's Oswaldo Minda made his first start for Ecuador in the tournament. You will recall he was called up just days before the World Cup started, as an injury replacement for Segundo Castillo. There's not too much to mention with Minda's playing time before he was subbed off in the 83rd minute. Minda played as a defending midfielder, not making his way in the attacking wave. He also shared the field with fellow Chivas USA midfielder Marvin Chavez, who came on as a sub in the 82nd minute to make his tournament debut.
Ultimately neither player really contributed to the team. I feel Marvin Chavez should have been starting for Honduras given a win against Ecuador would save them from elimination. Chavez seems to be getting overlooked for whatever reason.
You can catch Ecuador vs France and Honduras vs Switzerland next Wednesday, June 25, both at 1 pm PT on ESPN and ESPN2.
