U.S. Soccer announced the draw for the fifth round of the 2014 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday. Yes, the draw took place before the fourth round even happened, but that's how it works.
You may recall Chivas USA will enter the tournament in the fourth round by playing the NASL's Carolina RailHawks on June 14 in Cary, North Carolina. If they beat the RailHawks, they will then face the winner of the LA Galaxy-Arizona United SC fourth round game in the next round of the tournament.
The Goats and the Galaxy have avoided playing each other in the USOC every year except 2005, which the Galaxy won 5-2. For three straight years, the LA teams have been on a collision course to meet in the tournament, even while continually drawing teams from North Carolina, but they haven't actually played each other the last two years. Will this time around be different?
Of course, that's contingent on both CUSA beating Carolina and the Galaxy downing Arizona United, a reconstituted USL PRO side. Chivas USA's reserve team beat United 4-0 last month, for what that's worth, but the team has a lot of former MLS players on it, so they could prove to be better on a second meeting, especially as they are forming the team from the ground up.
Here's your friendly reminder that the U.S. Open Cup is Chivas USA's last best chance to win any silverware under the current brand.
We'll have plenty of coverage of the game against the RailHawks as it approaches.
