Good news! Early in Chivas USA's game against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, club history was made. Star striker Erick Torres scored in the 12th minute, notching his 15th goal of the MLS season.
Why is 15 a special number? It breaks the record for most goals scored in a season by a Chivas USA player, set back in 2006 by Ante Razov, who notched 14.
As a result, Cubo joins a group of other high-scoring strikers this season who have broken their respective MLS teams' single-season scoring record — Golden Boot leader Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls), and second in scoring at the moment, Dom Dwyer (Sporting Kansas City).
If nothing else, 2014 will go down in history for the terrific season Torres has had. He won't be in the reckoning for MLS MVP due to the team's record, but it seems difficult to argue any other player is as influential as he is.
Congratulations to Cubo! It's a terrific accomplishment.
