The Orange County Blues will look to snap their losing streak against the last team they beat, as they take on the Colorado Springs Switchbacks on the road on Wednesday evening. The Blues have hit a slump in their season, most notably a home-and-away pair of losses to the LA Galaxy II, and maybe getting out of town will be just what OC needs to get back on track and get back into playoff contention.
One big question is what the status is of two of the Blues' biggest attacking weapons, forward Christofer Ramirez and winger Denzel Slager, for this game. The pair have not featured since the 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders 2 on May 30, and the attack has lagged as a result. I reached out to the club regarding the duo, who are first and third in scoring on the team, respectively, to see if injuries were to blame regarding their absences, but received an official "no comment" response. So maybe they are injured, and if they are, it's unclear how long they will be out. That's a shame, because the attack just hasn't looked the same without them.
Meanwhile, the Switchbacks' fortunes have pretty much been the opposite of the Blues since the teams last met, as they've won their last four league games and have leaped up the Western Conference standings. They are listed in fourth place right now, but are really tied for second, just a point behind the leaders. That means they'll be gunning for first place in this game, and will have to like their chances, at home against a struggling Blues side.
The bright side for the Blues is that they still have games in hand on their conference rivals, so if they can turn those games in hand into points, they can shoot back up the standings pretty quickly. A win tonight would move them back over the red line into the playoff positions, certainly the minimum goal after such a bright start to the season. Can Blues coach Oliver Wyss inspire his group to end their poor run of form tonight against a hungry Colorado Springs side? As always, we'll have to watch to find out.
Tale of the Tape:
OC Blues: 16 points (5-5-1), 8th in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 3 (16/13); Last five matches: L-L-D-L-W
Colorado Springs Switchbacks: 24 points (8-5-0), 4th in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 10 (26/16); Last five matches: W-W-W-W-L
