Make that 0-for-5.
The Orange County Blues continued their winless ways, both in recent play and against the LA Galaxy II historically, as they lost 2-1 to the MLS side's USL team on Saturday at Anteater Stadium. Goals from Raul Mendiola and Kainoa Bailey canceled out Chris Cortez's tally, condemning the Blues to their fifth straight loss all-time against Galaxy II.
OC coach Oliver Wyss opted to rotate much of his lineup, with only Pepe Miranda, Brenton Griffiths, Luka Petricevic, Seung-ju Kim and Didier Crettenand the recent starters to get the nod on the night. The result was a team that needed some time to find its way, and Galaxy II had the more assured play overall on the night.
Still, it was fairly even until the opening goal, and the hosts nearly grabbed the first strike themselves. An unlikely player, defender Brenton Griffiths, tested Galaxy II goalkeeper Clement Diop in the 11th minute, but Diop was able to keep the shot in front of him and out of the goal.
Mendiola found the breakthrough in the 28th minute. Adonis Amaya sent a cross into the box to forward Jack McBean, who had the slightest of touches with the backheel to send the ball backwards, and Mendiola made the run into the box and buried the ball on the one-timer.
Orange County found life in the 54th minute, as Christopher Santana sent a long diagonal cross into the box to Cortez, who headed the ball past Diop in a crowd of G2 defenders to tie it up. At that point, it appeared the game would be a repeat of last week's result, a comeback draw against Seattle.
But then Bailey, a second half substitute, grabbed the winner in the 71st minute. The Blues failed to adequately clear the ball in their half, and the Galaxy II started a one-two move towards goal, with Bailey making the trailing run before blasting the ball home, catching OC unawares. It was a sloppy play for the hosts.
With the result, the Blues drop to 5th place in the West, while the Galaxy II vault up to 2nd. The Blues now have another long bye before going to Carson for the rematch against the Galaxy II on June 19, while Galaxy II have two league fixtures in the meantime before the next meeting against OC.
1. Raul Mendiola: Continued his strong form of late with the opening goal, and looked to continue his playmaker ways all night for the winning side.
2. Clement Diop: LA's 'keeper clearly looks like someone prone to a major gaffe on occasion, but his aggressive play against the Blues was effective and helped cut out OC chances before they often even developed.
3. Seung-ju Kim: No, he was not involved in the home team's goal, but his inventiveness shined all evening and he was perhaps a bit unlucky not to be on the scoresheet.
