After notching his first win in goal for the Orange County Blues in his second career start, Billy Thompson was honored on Tuesday by being named to USL's Team of the Week for Week 21. Thompson, who actually finished second in Player of the Week voting for OKC Energy forward Danni König, made six saves, none bigger than a second-half stoppage time block on a penalty kick to preserve the Blues' 1-0 win over the Austin Aztex on Saturday.
It is Thompson's first such honor on the Team of the Week, in just his third appearance with the Blues. Thompson got the nod in the Austin game because incumbent starter Pepe Miranda was suspended for the match after picking up a red card. One expects Miranda will likely be back between the sticks right away, but who knows -- the clutch performance of Thompson could give OC head coach Oliver Wyss a bit of a selection dilemma.
Thompson's selection makes it the third straight week a Blues player has been named to the Team of the Week or TOTW bench. Perhaps not coincidentally, the team is on a three-game winning streak at the moment.
