The Orange County Blues and Austin Aztex wrap up their 2015 USL season series, two weeks after it began, on Saturday in Texas (5:30 pm PT). The Blues are seeking a club record fifth consecutive win, not only to break the franchise benchmark but to also keep pace in the ultra-competitive Western Conference.
Although the Aztex appear to be all but out of the playoff picture, 12 points behind the Blues who are in the last slot at present, this is not an opponent for the visitors to take lightly. Yes, the Blues beat the Aztex in the teams' first meeting this season, a 1-0 win on August 8 at Anteater Stadium, but that was unquestionably the luckiest victory for Orange County during their current winning streak, as Austin had several near misses and then a saved penalty in second-half stoppage time. Yes, they played fine, but they escaped with a win in that one. Think Austin will be out for revenge? Of course!
So the Blues have their work cut out for them. On the bright side, they are playing well and each game different players are stepping up and contributing to the victories. On the downside, possibly, with the season's end approaching and the winning streak getting longer and longer, the pressure is growing week by week. Can Oliver Wyss keep his side focused and playing well enough to see things out? Can the Blues get the sweep against the Aztex? We'll find out come game time.
Tale of the Tape:
OC Blues: 36 points (11-8-3), 6th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 1 (31/30); Last five matches: W-W-W-W-D
Austin Aztex: 24 points (7-12-3), 11th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -6 (24/30); Last five matches: L-L-L-W-W
