The Orange County Blues complete the road slate of the 2015 regular season on Sunday afternoon as they meet the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 for the teams' final meeting of the year (3 pm PT). It's two games in three days on the road for the Blues, following their 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders 2 on Friday night, but it's also a massive opportunity for OC if they can grab a win.
If they do, indeed, win against WFC2, Orange County will move into first place in the Western Conference, ahead of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks, who were held to a draw on Saturday against OKC Energy FC. And that means that if the Blues want to win the Western Conference regular season title, their destiny is fully in their hands, as winning the final two games of the season would see them atop the conference when the music stops.
The ThunderCaps are well out of the playoff race and aren't in great form at the moment, on a three-game losing streak, but this is Orange County's first visit to Thunderbird Stadium and they're playing twice in less than 48 hours. They are on track to get a season sweep against Vancouver, but I certainly wouldn't consider this game a foregone conclusion.
Can the Blues really accomplish the next goal on the checklist and vault up into first place in the West? They're in great form and have found the right style of play to complement the team. This game alone won't make or break their season, but a win could position them to have the best season in the club's history. That's a lot of pressure but it's up to the team to get the job done on the field.
Tale of the Tape:
OC Blues: 45 points (14-9-3), 2nd place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 4 (37/33); Last five matches: W-W-W-L-W
Whitecaps FC 2:29 points (8-13-5), 11th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -13 (36/49); Last five matches: L-L-L-W-W
