The departures from the Orange County Blues continue this offseason, as one of the team’s longest-tenured players, defender Brenton Griffiths, was announced as one of the first additions to USL expansion side Reno 1868 FC on Tuesday.
Griffiths, 25, joined the Blues during the 2014 season, establishing himself as a starter the last two seasons. An all-League second team selection in 2015, for most of the past season the Jamaican was one of the first names on the teamsheet and he offered an attacking threat on set pieces that made him particularly valuable.
While the move is not a complete surprise, given the normal roster churn of USL and the major changes taking place for Orange County this offseason, Griffiths’ departure is the latest indication that the team that brought the club arguably its biggest successes the last two seasons is being fully disassembled. Griffiths is clearly a starting-caliber center back in USL, and while there are other talented players out there, replacing him won’t necessarily be easy.
So that puts the tally at five players from the Blues’ 2016 roster who have signed deals with other USL teams so far this offseason, and no signings announced by OC as of yet. We’ll be sure to continue to keep you updated on offseason news for the club as it comes out.
