The latest 2016 Orange County Blues player departure is here, as Phoenix Rising FC (aka the team formerly known as Arizona United SC) announced on Wednesday they have signed goalkeeper Josh Cohen.
Cohen started his pro career with the Blues, signing during the 2015 season after a collegiate career at UC San Diego. Getting spot duty his rookie season, Cohen effectively became co-No. 1 with reigning USL Goalkeeper of the Year Brandon Miller in 2016, and started both of the Blues’ playoff games this year, including a pivotal part in the team’s first ever playoff win, a 0-0 draw that was won via penalty shootout against Sacramento Republic.
So that makes Cohen the sixth OC player to sign with another USL team so far this offseason. Perhaps unsurprisingly, other teams want starter-caliber players and are picking them up from the Blues at a rapid pace, but that will leave the team itself with more players to find for the 2017 season. As I keep saying, roster churn is normal, but it will be nice to hear of some players incoming, too, when that starts happening.
