Another OC Blues player has officially left the club, as USL Western Conference rival Phoenix Rising FC (aka the team formerly known as Arizona United SC) announced last week that winger A.J. Gray has signed with them for the 2017 season.
Gray signed with the Blues in late summer during the team’s midseason flurry of signings. He played in seven total games for OC in 2016, offering a wing presence that was not previously featured on the roster, although he did not contribute any goals or assists in admittedly limited minutes.
This move is rather logical, however, as Gray has previous ties to Phoenix head coach Frank Yallop, a fellow Canadian and a player who had a trial with the San Jose Earthquakes back when Yallop was managing that side.
On the other hand, Gray becomes the seventh 2016 Blues player to depart the club and sign for another USL team so far this offseason. Gray wasn’t an automatic starter, but that’s another player to be replaced on Orange County’s roster next season.
