Sports Business Daily dropped their annual “50 Most Influential People in Sports” list on Monday, and there were several individuals listed with MLS ties. Of note locally, LAFC co-owner Peter Guber, along with his Golden State Warriors’ co-owner Joe Lacob, are ranked No. 18 by SBD.
While the Warriors drive Guber’s position in the rankings, given their record-breaking regular season and Game 7 NBA Finals loss in June, SBD does reference Guber’s interests in the Los Angeles Dodgers and yes, Los Angeles Football Club, in the blurb for the ranking. The ranking says Guber and Lacob are up 11 slots from last year’s list.
Of the other MLS-connected folks, only AEG’s Phil Anschutz (LA Galaxy owner, of course) ranks higher, at No. 17, while MLS Commissioner Don Garber is No. 19, Colorado Rapids owner Stan Kroenke is No. 30, and Atlanta United’s Arthur Blank is No. 41. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who has announced his interest in a Detroit MLS expansion team, comes in at No. 22.
And while these are knowledgable rankings — SBD doesn’t just pull names out of a hat — the list is obviously subjective and kind of a way to see who’s who in the American sports world at the moment. And at this moment, that includes one LAFC owner, which at the very least shouldn’t hurt the expansion team.
