The Los Angeles Football Club academy is officially here, and the first team to represent the black-and-gold will be the new U-12 squad.
More details have emerged on when and who the academy team will be playing this month. MLS announced the details of the Generation adidas Cup, to be held in Frisco, Texas beginning this week. While the full-sided U-17 tournament will take most of the headlines, the U-12 tournament, which begins next week, will also take place nearby.
Most notably, LAFC will enter the U-12 7v7 tournament, which will be held at the Toyota Soccer Center March 24-26. They aren't the only debutants, as they'll be joined by another new academy, fellow MLS expansion side Atlanta United.
Playing in Group B at the tournament, LAFC's first game at any level will be against Spanish club Celta de Vigo, on March 24, before facing their first MLS academy, Toronto FC, later that day. They will then take on Orlando City the following day. Since there's group play and an extra day built into the tournament schedule, it appears the top group finishers will advance to a knockout stage.
Of course, before we get ahead of ourselves, bear in mind that we're not only talking about an academy team, and so therefore development means more than results, but we're talking about U-12 boys and a brand-new program. No matter if LAFC win the whole tournament on the first try, or get blown away 10-0 in all of their games, this is just the beginning of what we hope will be a club that lasts decades, and the results are not the be all, end all. Still, it will be interesting to see history in some capacity get made, win, lose, or draw, next week.
