Some big news out of Irvine late Friday afternoon, as the Orange County Blues announced they have acquired midfielder Ivan Mirkovic on a transfer from USL rival Sacramento Republic FC.

Mirkovic, 29, from Belgrade, Serbia, has been with Sacramento since their inaugural season in 2014, when they captured the USL Championship. Prior to his stint in the state capital, he spent three seasons with the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion. He’s one of several players from Ventura to move on to the Republic, via Sacramento’s current technical director, Graham Smith, who who was previously the general manager for the Fusion.

With this addition, Orange County adds depth and experience to the holding midfielder role, along with Tampa Bay Rowdies loanee Verneri Valimaa, who patrolled that area for the Blues against Vancouver last Saturday.

Another interesting aspect of this transaction is that you don’t often see midseason transfers between two USL clubs. For whatever reason, they’re just not that common, although the Blues are no stranger to it, picking up forward Eli Garner in the middle of the 2014 season from the Dayton Dutch Lions.

Orange County host new Western Conference foe Saint Louis FC Saturday night at Anteater Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm PT.
