The Orange County Blues continued their winning streak, both on the season and against the opponent, as they defeated Portland Timbers 2 1-0 at Anteater Stadium on Wednesday, courtesy of Trevin Caesar's goal.
The victory begins OC's first winning streak of the season, and continues their historical dominance over T2, who they are a perfect 3-0-0 against all-time.
Both teams were solid to start the game, but the Blues became more and more crisp with their passing over the course of the first 45. They dealt with an early blow, as starting midfielder Oriol Cortes had to come off in the first quarter-hour due to injury. His replacement, Verneri Valimaa, was up to the task.
The Blues found their breakthrough in the 39th minute, as Caesar got on a pass from fellow striker Akwafei Ajeakwa in the box and slotted it past T2 goalkeeper Wade Hamilton. It is Caesar's first competitive goal for OC, and it would appear player and team alike are breathing a sigh of relief at the sight of the big offensive addition this season getting on the board.
The second half featured T2 coming into the game more and more, but OC's sometimes-shaky defense early in the game tightened up after the break. Brenton Griffiths made his return to the lineup as a second-half sub, and Tyler Feeley looked good coming off the bench as Ajeakwa was forced off as well due to injury.
All in all, the Blues appear to be a team still looking to finish their chances consistently and really impose a gameplan on opponents, but two wins in a row is a good sign and also a show of the progress they've made through five games in the season.
The Blues' next game is a week from Saturday against Sacramento Republic FC at Bonney Field. Although OC have had a road game this season, it was in Carson, so the upcoming game will be their first "real" road trip this season.
