How to Watch: LA Wolves FC vs. Orange County Blues

The Blues enter the competition against a local amateur side.

The 2016 U.S. Open Cup is underway, and on Wednesday, the eligible USL teams jump into the mix. That includes the Orange County Blues, who face tournament debutants LA Wolves FC at Banning High School in Wilmington. Kick off is schedule for 8 pm PT.

If you missed it, the actual match-up was up in the air for several days following last week's first-round result. The Wolves, an amateur UPSL side with aspirations to play on a bigger stage, actually lost their game to Ventura County Fusion 2-1. But LA filed a protest on the result, as Ventura County fielded an ineligible player. U.S. Soccer ruled in the Wolves' favor, and then again when the Fusion filed a protest on their disqualification from the tournament. As a result, LA Wolves are back in the competition, hosting the Blues and looking to extend their run in the Open Cup.

For the Blues, recent history has not been on their side when it comes to the Open Cup. The past two years, they have been knocked out of their first game in the tournament, to PSA Elite last year (who, to be fair, advanced farther than any amateur team last year), and to the Fresno Fuego in 2014. Given the two different coaches those two years, it's difficult to say if getting knocked out both times was a coincidence or an acknowledgment that they were prioritizing league play over the Open Cup.

But in Oliver Wyss' second year in charge of the Blues, this game against LA Wolves represents a chance for his team to most likely spread the playing time around the roster and test themselves against competition above and below them in the American pyramid.

The winner of this game will face the winner of OC's La Maquina vs. Sacramento Gold game, taking place at the Lake Forest Sports Complex on Wednesday. You never know how things will shake out, but it seems safe to say tonight and the upcoming third-round games should be wide open for the winners looking to make a bit of a run in the Open Cup.

How to Watch LA Wolves FC vs. Orange County Blues: At the moment, the main option to watch the game is by going to see it in person.

Open Cup blog TheCup.us currently has the audio/stream option as "TBA", which most likely means there won't be any transmission of the game, although we'll keep you updated if that changes.
