The only all-amateur Round 3 showdown in the 2016 U.S. Open Cup is in Southern California, and it's happening tonight.
UPSL foes La Máquina and LA Wolves FC will square off at Westminster High School in Westminster for the chance to play the LA Galaxy in the next round of the tournament. For both sides, making their first forays into the Open Cup, they will know they have as good a chance as possible of advancing and actually playing an MLS side in a competitive game.
The teams have slightly different histories, as LA Wolves, named for the former NASL side, were formed in 2014 and have expressed interest in moving into the professional ranks some day. La Máquina, on the other hand, have been around for 12 years, but previously played in the local tournament circuit, where they were quite successful. They joined the local UPSL as a way to facilitate a possible road to the Open Cup, and now they are enjoying the fruits of their efforts.
How they got here
La Máquina: Defeated Portland Timbers U-23s 2-0 in Round 1; Defeated Sacramento Gold 2-0 in Round 2.
LA Wolves: Advanced past Ventura County Fusion in Round 1 after the Fusion fielded a cup-tied player; Defeated Orange County Blues 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) in Round 2.
How to watch La Máquina vs. LA Wolves FC
Given the amateur status of the teams, there is no announced video or audio options to follow this game, so if you want to watch, you'll have to go to Westminster High School. Kick off is scheduled for 7 pm PT. Both the official U.S. Open Cup twitter account and USOC blog TheCup.us' twitter account should have updates throughout the evening.
