The Orange County Blues continue their busy run of games with a road trip up to British Columbia for a game on Wednesday evening against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. It’s the second meeting of the season, after the ThunderCaps beat OC in Irvine in the season opener.
Since then, the teams’ fortunes have differed considerably. Vancouver, considered a middle-of-the-pack team heading into the season, have remained atop the Western Conference standings nearly the entire way, and have not suffered any sustained slumps to drop well down the table. The Blues, meanwhile, have struggled with inconsistency this season, although two recent wins provide hope that they have turned a corner and will be booking a place in the playoffs, something that has not always been assured this year.
It’s going to be a tough game for the Blues, make no mistake, not least because Ivan Mirkovic and Maurice Pluntke are suspended for this one due to yellow-card accumulation. Still, the Blues have been playing better on the whole since their raft of signings the past couple weeks, and even with Whitecaps 2 sitting on top of the West, they’ve only won one in their last five games.
So this will be a challenge, but a result here would further bolster the Blues’ playoff chances with the games dwindling. Will they get points from their trip to Canada? We will see tonight!
Tale of the Tape:
OC Blues: 28 points (8-10-4), 8th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -7 (28/35); Last five matches: L-W-W-L-L
WFC2: 37 points (10-5-7), 1st place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 3 (36/33); Last five matches: D-L-D-W-L
