The Orange County Blues will look to get closer to their USL postseason ambitions as they host Rio Grande Valley FC for the first time Saturday evening at Anteater Stadium (5:30 pm PT).
The Blues, who beat RGVFC 2-1 on the road in the teams’ first ever meeting, have a simple task: If they win their final two games, starting with this one tonight, they’ll guarantee qualification for the playoffs.
And it’s possible they could win tonight and still qualify with one game to go, if four teams below them all fail to pick up maximum points.
So the objective is simple. But, oh yeah, RGVFC aren’t an opponent to take lightly. In their first season, they have put together an impressive campaign and have already booked their playoff ticket. Possessing a Western Conference-best +19 goal difference, the Houston Dynamo affiliate, coached by former Chivas USA boss Wilmer Cabrera, has to be one of the dark horses come the postseason. That said, they are on a two-game losing streak and have been beaten by the Blues already, even if that game was a little odd, with two PKs going Orange County’s way.
But the task is simple: Win, and OC still control their destiny. Anything less than that, and they’ll be biting their fingernails heading into the final weekend.
Tale of the Tape:
OC Blues: 37 points (11-13-4), 8th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -5 (35/40); Last five games: W-L-L-W-L
RGVFC: 45 points (12-7-9), 3rd place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: 19 (43/24); Last five games: L-L-W-W-W
