Orange County SC announced the return of defender Roy Meeus for the 2017 season on Wednesday. The 27-year-old comes back for a second season after joining ahead of the 2016 campaign.
The Belgian was a key part of Orange County’s form early in the 2016 season, becoming the starting left back and leading the team in scoring and assists through the early part of the year.
He made 27 appearances last season, but was replaced as starting left back by Andrae Campbell as the season wore on. Strangely, Orange County SC also signed another left back, Juan Pablo Ocegueda, so either there will be an almighty battle for that slot, one of the players will switch to right back, or Meeus might be moved into the midfield in 2017.
Meeus’ return makes him the third member of the 2016 roster to come back, alongside Richard Chaplow and Dusan Stevanovic, and the seventh player overall signed for 2017, joining the aforementioned trio and Kevin Jeon and Gustavo Villalobos. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all developments as OCSC moves into the preseason.
