The news was expected, but Los Angeles Football Club will be expanding their boys academy program this year. U.S. Soccer announced an expansion of the Development Academy for the 2017-18 season on Friday.
As part of the expansion, LAFC will enter U-13 and U-14 teams in the Development Academy next season, to go with the existing U-12 team.
The scaling up is in line with previously stated plans to have LAFC’s academy fully built out by the fall of 2018. With the USSDA now going to the U-19 level, there will be another big addition in about a year and a half, to add the oldest, prospective professional age groups.
But for now the plan to add levels to the club’s boys academy is on track, and the first ever academy cohort will move up and include new cohorts to the program. Exciting times for the club.
