Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale is expected to miss three weeks with a left calf injury picked up in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona. This injury, which is the 17th different injury in Bale’s four years at Madrid, will keep him out of both Champions League semifinal legs against neighbors Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane said in a press conference that Bale told him he was “100 percent“ and that there were no problems in his training sessions before the match, and that he expects Madrid will have Bale back before the end of the season.
Manchester United Midfielder Ander Herrera, ahead of the Red Devils’ Thursday derby against Manchester City, said that the match against their Manchester neighbors is “the game of the season.“ Manchester United is currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League table with 63 points, just one point behind Manchester City, as both squads battle for Champions League Qualification. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City must finish in the top four to qualify, while Manchester United, under Jose Mourinho, can either finish in the top four or win the Europa League for qualification. Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure also talked about how important the game will be for his squad.
Antoine Griezmann’s agent, Eric Olhats, told French soccer TV outlet Telefoot that Manchester United have discussed meeting Griezmann’s 100 million euro release clause. He also said that Manchester United were “the first to come and see us and the most concrete in their wishes.“ Griezmann has scored 25 goals in 46 games for Atletico Madrid this season, and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic possibly done in Manchester after rupturing his ACL, Griezmann may be the next man up to lead the line for Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Newcastle United, under manager Rafa Benitez, have officially secured promotion back to the Premier League after beating Preston North End 4-1 on Sunday. Ayoze Perez scored a double for the Magpies, Christian Atsu added a goal, and Matt Ritchie socred a penalty after a Paul Gallagher handball and sending off. Benitez, who was hired for the last ten games of the 2015-16 season, stayed with the club for their Championship campaign, and has led the club to a second-place finish, avoiding the Championship promotion playoff for the third spot in the Premier League.
After Alexis Sanchez’ latest star performance, in the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City, the Mirror reports that Bayern Munich have labelled the Chilean winger as their no. 1 transfer target for next season. Sanchez has just 12 months left on his Arsenal contract, and Bayern have become too reliant on Robert Lewandowski as Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery have struggled. In addition, Douglas Costa may have a future somewhere other than in Munich, Kingsley Coman may return to Juventus, and Arjen Robben is not getting any younger. Arsene Wenger has been adamant that Sanchez will stay at the Emirates next season, but Bayern Munich has the winger in their sights and may make a move for him in the summer.
